Friday 24 June 2022 was no ordinary day for the Azbuka community. The\nschool hall in a beautiful Victorian building in West London was packed with\nchildren, teachers, parents and friends, and with emotions: happiness and\nachievement, pride and humility, smiles and tears, sadness and reflection as\nthey moved on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first\ncohort of students was graduating from Azbuka Primary\nSchool, signalling an important milestone in the success of the Anglo-Russian\ninternational primary school in London, and for bilingual education in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A small group\ncompleted Year 6, bringing to an end their studies using a pioneering 2-way\nimmersion bilingual and multicultural education curriculum. They were all well\nprepared to move on to a range of highly regarded state and independent\nsecondary schools around London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Azbuka Primary\nSchool, the UK\u2019s only independent Anglo-Russian primary school, built on\nthe Azbuka Foundation\u2019s oversubscribed Nursery\nschool (est. in 2002), complementary Saturday school and education centre created\ntwo decades ago. The Primary school opened in 2016 and now offers full-time\nbilingual curriculum from nursery\/reception through to Year 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journey\ntowards a full-time bilingual school has been long, exciting and challenging. Inspired\nby the vision of the founding members, it was formed as charitable foundation,\nindependent from either Russian or British government funding and focussed, to\nserve the linguistic, cultural, social and academic needs of its own multicultural\ncommunity. Over the years, Azbuka has attracted families, trustees\nand supporters from many different backgrounds, nationalities and cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of its\nstudents benefit from a fully immersive curriculum and rich extra-curricular\nactivities taught in both Russian and English, drawing on the best traditions\nof both cultures. They speak 15 languages and comprise a thriving multilingual\ncommunity with many mixed families and teachers with origins in the cultures of\nRussia, England, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, USA, France, Spain, Estonia, Italy,\nSweden, Latvia and China among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Azbuka school\nhas recently also offered a number of places to children arriving from Ukraine,\nwith extra curriculum support for English, Ukrainian and Russian languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maria\nGavrilova, founder and headteacher, said: \u201cI\u2019m thrilled to see our\nfirst students graduate. On the 24th June my dream came true. 2022 marks a\nreally exciting milestone for Azbuka school, which our dedicated\nstaff have been building with innovative approaches to bilingual pedagogy to\nprepare our children for the future in the best possible way, building on\ntolerance and understanding.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gift of\nanother language and culture is truly unique: from the early childhood it opens\nthe doors to another way of comprehending the world, granting a gift of true\nunderstanding, love and compassion as well as wider academic, cognitive and\neconomic benefits. In our world torn by division and confrontation, the very\nidea of a bilingual educational space – where children and teachers of very\ndifferent cultures learn, play, make friends and work together \u2013 is becoming\nmore important than ever. Every day at Azbuka brings more convincing\nproof of the humanitarian and unifying value of bilingual education.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The birth, survival\nand growth of bilingual education demonstrates a profound truth: humanity\ntranscends conventional political, cultural or linguistic border. Connection\nand understanding are at the very depth of the human heart.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anastasija <\/strong>Royce,\nparent of one of the graduates, said: \u201cWe were lucky with the timing: our\nson was in the first year the school started and is one of the first graduates.\nThe incredible journey over the past 7 years was as exciting and fruitful as it\ngets in a caring and engaging educational environment.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Azbuka is more than a school, it\nis an extended family to us and I am sure to all the children that attend the\nschool. On behalf of myself and other parents I would like to express\nour heartfelt gratitude to the head teacher and all teachers and staff for\ntheir professionalism, dedication and care, which made an extremely important\ndifference to the lives of our children. May the School continue its success\nover the years to come.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul Hume,\nhead of English department and deputy head, said: \u201cI am so proud to have had\nthe privilege of teaching this cohort from Year 4 to 6. The journey they have\nmade, their progress both socially and academically, is testament to the\nquality of the school\u2019s bilingual curriculum. It gives me great pleasure to see\nthem graduate with fantastic results and I wish them every success for the\nfuture.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Vally\nLytra, an Azbuka governor and academic, said: \u201cWarmest\ncongratulations to the class of 2022! As a new school governor, I had the\nopportunity and privilege to recently witness the Year 6 cohort in action. I\nwas impressed by their confidence and their openness and curiosity about making\nconnections across languages and cultures. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was equally impressed by the children\u2019s welcoming attitude towards a\nnew refugee classmate from Ukraine, who have joined the school. Its inclusive\npedagogical approach and rigorous curriculum alongside an ethos of care and\nrespect creates a nurturing environment for all children to grow academically,\nsocially and emotionally and equips them with the knowledge and skills to\nsucceed and make a positive contribution in a multilingual and multicultural\nworld.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jelena Rosenberg, said: \u201cAs a class teacher and Head of the Russian\ncurriculum at Azbuka school I have witnessed and played my part in\nour school’s development and growth, from a single class intake of just three\nstudent to the full primary school setting of today. Azbuka has grown\nas have its students, who together with their teachers and parents began an\nexciting journey into the world of bilingualism all those years ago. I am very\nproud of our Year 6 students’ achievements and results.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opening Azbuka school was a daring though well researched idea,\nthe realisation of a dream for our founding members, who have managed to build\na strong and enthusiastic team of teachers around them, who have poured all\ntheir knowledge, skills and creativity into the project.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a leap\ninto uncharted waters for many of us. The big idea, whilst founded on strong\ntheoretical principles, needed to be brought to life \u2013 a bilingual curriculum.<\/em>\n<\/em>This was a challenging task for both English and Russian\nteachers.<\/em> <\/em>With our students’\ninterests and developmental needs uppermost in our minds, once the year one\ntopics were carefully chosen; English and Russian linguistic objectives set;\nPeterson’s Maths programme launched; and supportive literature in both\nlanguages ordered – the learning began. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six years on,\nAzbuka school has developed a broad, culture rich, comprehensive\nand unique curriculum for all classes. Along with English, Russian and Maths we\nteach History, Geography and Science in both languages, covering a wide range\nof interesting topics.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

All Azbuka school children have opportunities to apply\nthemselves in art, dance and song, and to develop drama and circus skills. Our\nKS2 children participate in Spanish, practical Science and IT lessons provided\nby specialist teachers. In Azbuka we strongly\nbelieve and actively promote cultural interaction with the wider world beyond\nthe school premises. Educational visits to museums, galleries, theatres and\nother cultural venues are supplemented with talks by invited speakers are all considered\nvery important and therefore a compulsory and hugely enjoyable part of our\ncurriculum.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

All school\nstaff work together in the education and development of our students to help\nthem to become not only confident users of language and maths but also\nbeautiful, kind and openminded individuals.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nschool is an integral part of the bilingual education movement in\nEngland, as a member of the Independent Schools Association (ISA) and a\nfounding member of the Bilingual Education Alliance (BEA), a network and\nassociation of bilingual and international schools within the UK.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
